On Saturday, 19 May some of Lyons Davidson's employees volunteered to help Headway Bristol with their garden. Heather Kearton-Gee and Sophie Miller from the Head Injury team, Charlotte Hamill and Shallom Nkwocha (also from Group 28) and Seamus Neville from File Dynamics spent three hours sanding and painting garden furniture, preparing large planters for growing vegetables and flowers and assembling a small greenhouse. They also helped to install some decorations that the Headway Service users had made out of bicycle wheels. The official opening of the garden will take place on 11 June.

On Friday (18 May) the Head Injury team donned very silly hats for a very serious cause: Hats for Headway, an annual fundraiser for the national charity that works to improve life after brain injury. You can find out more about the event on our website and see pictures of staff in outlandish headwear below. https://www.lyonsdavidson.co.uk/brain-injury-week-2018/

Saturday 12 May 2018 is World Fair Trade Day World Fair Trade Day is an initiative by theWorld Fair Trade Organization (WFTO – wfto.com/) that takes place on the second Saturday of May each year. It's is a celebration of Fair Trade as a key component of sustainable development. Fair trade contributes to economic empowerment of independent, small-scale producers of commodities like cotton, gold, tropical fruits, cacao, coffee and sugar, to name a few. It also enhances gender equality in workplaces and fosters responsible production practices. This year we're supporting the WFTO’s message of ‘Live Fair, one product at a time’ by encouraging everyon to join in with the social media campaign to promote fair consumption of commodities and to help spread the message of #LiveFair #FairtradeDay. To join in the campaign, simply follow the instructions provided by the WFTO below… Easy steps to use your social media powers: 1. On your mobile phone, use the Live Fair Facebook camera effect to take photos and videos with the #LiveFair frame. You can use the camera effect for your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts. 2. For mobile phones only: Use https://www.facebook.com/fbcameraeffects/tryit/468657126885738/ to create selfies, photos and videos with our #LiveFair Camera Effect. It's easy: hit the 'Try' button then check your Facebook notification on your mobile phone app (not the browser). Then start creating #LiveFair images or videos. Have Fun! 3. Bristol staff: do you fancy getting in the saddle and cycling to work but feel a bit nervous on the road on two wheels? Yes? Then this is a great time to try out Join My Journey and find fellow cyclists to join on the route to work. It can daunting cycling to work each day, so to gain confidence we recommend cycling with a buddy or speaking with someone who knows the route well for advice and support. We try to make it as easy as possible for cycle commuters - most of our offices are fitted out with secure bicycle racks and showers facilities so that cyclists (and runners, joggers and walkers!) and can freshen up after energetic journeys. We’re also calling on experienced Bristol cyclists to volunteer as Cycle Champions to give advice and offer support to beginners and seasonal cyclists – anything from tips on the best clothing, safety or the correct tyres for a particular terrain. If you would like to be a Cycle Champion, then contact Clive Croal in Group 49 for details. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a fresher, if you’re thinking about getting your hands on a new bike then don’t forget to check out the Bike to Work Scheme. This brilliant benefit means big savings on new bikes – plus you get healthier and save money on commuting too! For more details, contact Laura Tamlin in the HR team.

As part of Lyons Davidson’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, we’re sharing information about cutting back on plastic use in support of Earth Day, today, 23 April. Environmental Management Systems Co-ordinator Clive Croal looks at what can be done... What is Earth Day? The Earth Day Network (EDN) is the international organisation behind Earth Day and this year they are focusing on ending plastic pollution by eliminating single-use plastics and implementing global regulation for the disposal of plastics in general. What’s the scale of the pollution? The campaign is fueled by a wealth of evidence supporting the position that disintegrating plastics are damaging to our heath and the environment. This has been a growing concern for a long time but especially in the last decade, we’ve seen plastic waste become ubiquitous in our daily lives, on land, in rivers, and particularly in the sea. Around 8 million tonnes of plastic are thrown into the world’s oceans annually and synthetic fibres have been found as far as 11km deep. A depressing discovery by a British-led expedition indicates the scale of this pollution as they witnessed large polystyrene chunks strewn over remote frozen ice floes in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. Does plastic affect health? Plastics break down into micro plastics or microfibers, releasing toxic chemicals as they do so. Many marine organisms cannot distinguish plastics from food and ingest them. Effects include digestive blockages, developmental problems and starvation. They affect a wide cross section of marine species from coral and microscopic algae to whales, sharks and dolphins. In humans, there is compelling evidence that plastic is contributing to an array of health problems. What can you do? EDN is encouraging people to learn about the risks associated with the use and disposal of plastics and inspire them to change their behaviour. Evidence showing the power we, as consumers, have is outlined in a new study looking at the composition of marine litter in which researchers have estimated a 30% reduction in the number of plastic bags found on the British sea bed since 2010! This is attributed to consumers moving away from single-use bags since levies were introduced across Europe from 2003. The 5p charge has decreased single use bag consumption in England alone by 85%. Some other ways you can have a positive impact include… cutting down on unflushable plastics or disposing of them correctly: flushed plastics like wet wipes, cotton buds, dental floss, sanitary and cosmetic products make up around 7% of beach litter in the UK according to campaign group, City to Sea. Wet wipes make up 93% of matter causing UK sewer blockages, so make sure that you dispose of them correctly by putting them in the bin. Substituting for more durable non-plastic options Source cosmetic products that do not contain microbeads but instead use minerals or natural exfoliants; try using beeswax food wraps instead of cling-film for keeping food fresh; increase your use of glass and metal containers rather than plastic tubs; wear more natural fibers like cotton, rayon, wool and silk. There are so many changes we can make that will all have an impact through the collective power of consumer behavior, just like the reduction in plastic bags in the sea around the UK. Anything from reuseable coffee cups to making sure you carry non-plastic reuseable shopping bags. Check out a great list of other plastic alternatives at My Plastic Free Life. earthday.org/earth-day-tips/
